UB Medical School Graduates Receive Awards

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Forty-two graduates of the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences received awards at the school's recent commencement ceremony.

The University at Buffalo is a premier research-intensive public university, the largest and most comprehensive campus in the State University of New York. UB's more than 27,000 students pursue their academic interests through more than 300 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs.

Among the recipients are nine students who received multiple awards:

• Sara Elizabeth Brooks-Sienkiewicz of Randolph, the Dr. George Alker Award recognizing excellence in radiology; the Stein Neural Anatomy Prize; the American Medical Women's Association Glasgow-Rubin Certificates of Commendation for Academic Achievement, and a Merck Manual Award recognizing most outstanding academic performance overall

• Antoinette Marie Valenti of Lancaster, the Robin M. Bannerman Memorial Research Award for most meritorious research in biomedical science initiated in the Summer Fellowship Program and the Gilbert M. Beck Memorial Prize recognizing academic excellence in psychiatry

• Jeffrey Feiner of New Hartford, the Buffalo Surgical Society Prize recognizing academic excellence in the junior and senior years; Maimonides Medical Society Award recognizing the most outstanding academic performance coupled with wisdom and compassion; The Morris & Sadie Stein Neuroanatomy Award, and Merck Manual Award recognizing most outstanding academic performance overall

• Safina Faruk Koreishi of Buffalo, the Humanism in Medicine Award; the Mark A. Petrino Award recognizing interest and aptitude in the general practice of medicine and the American Medical Women's Association Glasgow-Rubin Certificates of Commendation for Academic Achievement

• Andrea Marie Buccilli of Cheektowaga, the James Platt White Award for leadership qualities that personify those of White's—foresight, intellectual vigor and moral courage; the E.J. Weisenheimer Award recognizing excellence in scholarship and patient care in ophthalmology, and the American Medical Women's Association Glasgow-Rubin Certificates of Commendation for Academic Achievement

• Beth Peterson of Hamburg, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the American Medical Women's Association Glasgow-Rubin Certificates of Commendation for Academic Achievement

• Mark Burker of Woodinville, Wash., the Department of Emergency Medicine Award and the Bernhardt & Sophie Gottlieb Award recognizing expertise in areas outside medicine

• Kristin Algoe of Lockport, the Hans J. Lowenstein Award in Obstetrics and the American Medical Women's Association Glasgow-Rubin Certificates of Commendation for Academic Achievement

• Allison Graziadei of Little Falls, the Stephen J. Paolini Award for exemplifying the qualities of dedication and compassion that Paolini personified and the American Medical Women's Association Glasgow-Rubin Certificates of Commendation for Academic Achievement

• Glenn Patterson Miller of Owego, the Elizabeth Medical Award

• Carla Anne Kinyon of East Amherst, the Bernhardt & Sophie Gottlieb Award recognizing expertise in areas outside medicine

• Amanda R. Kost of Wooster, Ohio, the Ester Ponce Grimaldi M.D. Memorial Award,recognizing compassion for patients in primary care

• Houman Vosoghi of Encino, Calif., the Thomas J. Guttuso Award presented for academic excellence in ophthalmology

• Theodora Niki Petratos of Port Washington, the Harry E. and Loretta A. Jordan Award

• Kevin Thomas Shiley of Buffalo, the Harry E. and Loretta A. Jordan Award

• Thomas James Gruber of Buffalo, the Dr. Heinrich Leonhardt Prize in Surgery for academic excellence in surgery and interest in proctology

• Peter J. Filocamo of Williamsville, the Lieberman Award, recognizing interest and aptitude in the study of anesthesiology

• Elizabeth Joy Honigsberg of Scarsdale, the Medical Alumni Award, recognizing community service and commitment

• Katherine Sciandra of Williamsville, the Association of Pathology Chairs award for excellence in pathology

• David Wagner of Pittsford, the Association of Pathology Chairs award for excellence in pathology

• Michael Sanflippo of Amherst, the Bacelli Medical Award

• Jacqueline Eileen Julius of Rochester, the Charles Bauda Award for academic excellence in family medicine

• Jade Tan of Staten Island, the Children's Hospital Prize, recognizing excellence in understanding disease in childhood

• Elizabeth Michelle Volz of Williamsville, the Dean's Award, sponsored by the Medical Alumni Association for participation in extracurricular activities in the medical school while maintaining a high standard of academic excellence

• Andrew Sokolow of Penfield, the Buffalo Pediatric Society award, recognizing outstanding pediatric skills

• Ryan Nelson of Webster, the David K. Miller Prize in Medicine for demonstrating Miller's approach to caring for the sick—competence, humility, humanity

• Bridgid Eagan Mack of Albany, the G. Norris Miner Memorial Award recognizing outstanding clinical competence in family medicine

• Sara-Maiz A. Thomas of Jamestown, N.C., the National Medical Association Award, recognizing excellence in scholarship, leadership and commitment of community service

• Jennifer Gurske of Webster, the Dr. Benjamin E. and Lila Obletz Prize for outstanding performance in orthopaedic surgery

• Matthew Ray Doubrava of Las Vegas, Nev., the John Paroski M.D. Memorial Award recognizing compassion and excellence in patient care

• Danielle Feldman of New York City, the Clyde L. Randall Society Award in Gynecology-Obstetrics

• Faye Justicia-Linde of Orchard Park, the Clyde L. Randall Society Award in Gynecology-Obstetrics

• Donna Rose Swistowski of Hamburg, the Emilie Davis Rodenberg Memorial Award for academic excellence in the study of diabetes and its complications

• Matthew Cochran Aboudara of Carlsbad, Calif., the Philip P. Sang Memorial Award recognizing the ability to relate well to patients, faculty and staff
