BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts on the UB North (Amherst) Campus will host "Sound Action," a musical performance by the Open Music Ensemble, on March 30 at 5 pm.

Eleven performers will collaborate in situations and events that stretch the boundaries of musical presentation. This concert presents sound and action in the production of music, including movement, lighting, and instrumental techniques.

The performance will be free and open to the public.

Composers do not generally shape sounds themselves. Instead, the composer creates a score -- a detailed set of directions, symbols, diagrams -- to describe a certain set of sounds and to instruct a performer as to how, when, (and why?) to make them. This concert demonstrates the possibilities that result from scores that determine not only the sounds that performers make, but the entirely of their action.

The Ensemble will be performing "Con Voce" by Mauricio Kagel; "4 Do-it-Yourself Pieces" by Ben Johnston; "L's G.A." by Salvatore Martirano; "To Valerie Solanes and Marilyn Monroe In Recognition of Their Desperation" by Pauline Oliveros and "Cathedra" by Otto Müller.

Ensemble Performers are Josh DeScherer (bass & bouncy balls); Jenece Gerber (voice); Ben Harris (violin & voice); Leah Muir (violoncello, voice & lights); Otto Müller (accordion, trombone & walker); Robert Phillips (mime & voice); Chris Reba (bass & bouncy balls); Will Redman (cymbal & lights); J.T. Rinker (trumpet & bouncy balls); Bill Sack (guitar & oboe); and N. Andrew Walsh (contrabassoon, goblets & politico).

Sound Action is sponsored by the UB Art Gallery and the Open Music Foundation. The UB Art Gallery is funded by the College of Arts and Sciences, the Visual Arts Building Fund, the Seymour H. Knox Foundation Fine Arts Fund and the Fine Arts Center Endowment.

The UB Art Gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, with extended hours from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, please call 716-645-6912.
