Students in UB School of Public Health and Health Professions Receive Awards

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Twenty new graduates of the School of Public Health and Health Professions at the University at Buffalo were honored with scholarships and awards during the school's recent commencement ceremony.

The University at Buffalo is a premier research-intensive public university, the largest and most comprehensive campus in the State University of New York. UB's more than 27,000 students pursue their academic interests through more than 300 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs. Founded in 1846, the University at Buffalo is a member of the Association of American Universities.

The award recipients are:

• Christine Lo Bue-Estes of Orchard Park, the AAAS/Science Program for Excellence in Science award, fall 2006. Bue-Estes also received an Annette Rachman Scholarship recognizing students who maintained at least a "B" average studying in the field of nutrition and dietetics.

• Randi Bryn Kaplan of Woodridge, inducted into the Golden Key International Honor Society and the Tau Sigma National Honor Society.

• Lana Burl of Orchard Park, the Francis Hanavan Award.

• Rachael J. Pohle-Krauza of West Seneca, the Denise Howland Scholarship Award and an Annette Rachman Scholarship recognizing students who maintained at least a "B" average studying in the field of nutrition and dietetics.

• Chia-Ling Wu of Amherst, the Carlton R. Meyers Award recognizing an outstanding student from the Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences.

• Dana Foreman of Harriman, the Arthur A. Schomburg Graduate Fellowship.

• Sarah Burns of Conklin, an Annette Rachman Scholarship recognizing students who maintained at least a "B" average studying in the field of nutrition and dietetics.

• Robert Alan Richards of Islip, the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. Richards also was recognized for outstanding academic achievement in the Exercise Science Program for maintaining a 3.6 university departmental grade-point average.

The following students received J. Warren Perry Scholarships:

• Nicola Cavallo of Cedarhurst.

• Carol A. DeNysschen of Orchard Park.

• Sean Smith of Buffalo.

The following students received Stonegraber Scholarships:

• Kayla Fleet of Rome.

• Shelley Jessup of Lockport.

• Kelly Kumpf of Cortland.

• John Schroeder of North Tonawanda.

• Justin Spiegel of Batavia.

• Beverly Weyer of Castalia, Ohio.

• Angela Duell of Buffalo.

The following students in the Exercise Science Program were recognized for outstanding academic achievement for maintaining a 3.6 university departmental grade-point average:

• Mary Rose Clausen of Churchville.

• Jay James Slutsky of Wantagh.
