UB Students Earn Top National Awards, Fellowships

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Three University at Buffalo undergraduate students and a December UB graduate have received nationally prestigious awards and fellowships.

Bradley W. Cheetham, a junior from Cortland, N.Y., is the recipient of a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, presented to college sophomores and juniors who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue advanced degrees in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering. A recipient of a NASA Space Grant Fellowship, he is researching engineering problems associated with returning to the moon, and will participate in the prestigious NASA Academy at Goddard Space Flight Center this summer.

Aaron Krolikowski, a junior from Glenwood, N.Y., is the recipient of a Morris K. Udall Scholarship. He also he is the first UB student since 1992 to be a nominee and a finalist for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, awarded to junior-level college students preparing for careers in public service based on leadership potential, intellectual ability and likelihood of "making a difference."

Kelly R. Miller of Pittsford, a senior majoring in environmental engineering, has been awarded the highly competitive National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, which provides three years of support for graduate study. After graduation, Miller plans to work for six months with Greenpeace's Project Hot Seat Campaign as a field organizer and will enroll in the master's program in engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in fall 2009.

Stacy Pustulka, a resident of West Seneca and a December 2007 UB graduate, also has been awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. She has received a Dean's Fellowship and a James C. Meade Graduate Fellowship from Carnegie Mellon University, where she will begin her studies toward a doctoral degree in chemical engineering this fall, focusing on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
