BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo is looking for high-achieving middle school students to fill remaining slots in its two-week summer mathematics and science camp at the Buffalo Museum of Science.
Funded through a $100,000 grant from the New York State Education Department's Excelsior Scholars Program, the summer camp has already attracted qualified eighth-grade students from the Buffalo Public Schools. Camp officials this week decided to allow non-Buffalo Public Schools students the opportunity to apply for positions still open.
The summer camp, which is free to those accepted, will be held weekdays from Aug. 4-15 at the Buffalo Museum of Science and will include intensive hands-on classes revolving around a "Mysteries of Science" theme. Students will tour local biomedical and scientific facilities, hone their career development skills and design a guided research project presented to a panel of scientists.
The program was developed by UB's Center for Educational Collaboration with the Buffalo Public Schools as part of the UB/BPS Partnership.
Applications are being sought from students entering eighth grade who earned 4s (highest achievement level) in either math or ELA on New York State assessments for 2005-2006 and 2006-2007, and maintained a 90 or above GPA in math and science.
Interested students and their parents should contact Teresa Barrett at the UB Center for Educational Collaboration at 829-3099 or 829-6144 for application and additional information. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come basis.
The University at Buffalo is a premier research-intensive public university, a flagship institution in the State University of New York system and its largest and most comprehensive campus. UB's more than 28,000 students pursue their academic interests through more than 300 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs. Founded in 1846, the University at Buffalo is a member of the Association of American Universities.
