The University at Buffalo Department of Media Study -- widely considered the birthplace of modern media study -- will mark its 35th anniversary this weekend with a three-day celebration that will include lots of reminiscences, as well as screenings and presentations of departmental work.
The events, all free and open to the public, will take place in the Screening Room (Room 112) in the Center for the Arts on the UB North (Amherst) Campus.
The anniversary will be celebrated from 2-10 p.m. Friday, May 1, with recollection of the early years of the department, including a screening at 7:30 p.m. of works by students enrolled in the program from 1973-83. On Saturday, May 2, the program will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a public reception at 9 p.m. On Sunday, May 3, a presentation featuring teachers and curators will begin at 10 a.m.
Among the participants will be pioneering media artists and founding Media Study faculty members Gerald O'Grady, Tony Conrad, Steina and Woody Vasulka and Peter Weibel and many noted alumni.
