Present and Future Job Openings at UB are Focus of Career Pathways Information Sessions

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Bringing more Western New Yorkers into the University at Buffalo workforce now and in the future is the focus of two Career Pathways Information Sessions scheduled for May 9 and May 12 being held on UB's South (Main Street) Campus.

Immediate openings exist for 42 custodial jobs, and many additional positions are expected to be created in the future to meet the needs of UB 2020, the plan to expand UB and increase its economic impact on Western New York from $1.7 billion to $3.6 billion annually.

UB anticipates creating 6,700 new jobs, ranging from maintenance to secretarial to administrative-support jobs, in addition to faculty and research positions, in the next 15-18 years to meet the goals of UB 2020.

"In these tough economic times, it's encouraging to see that one of Western New York's largest employers is continuing to hire and is providing valuable information about future job opportunities available to our community," said Mayor Byron W. Brown.

Buffalo Common Council Member Bonnie E. Russell said "I'm pleased that UB is providing these types opportunities for the people of Western New York and particularly for the citizens of Buffalo."

The Career Pathways Information Sessions will be held in 100 Allen Hall from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, and from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12.

"There are real jobs available right now," said James L. Jarvis, Jr., UB assistant vice president for human resources, referring to custodial positions held formerly by outside contract employees that now are being filled by state workers.

"This job fair also will provide information on the general workforce growth we expect to experience down the road," said Jarvis. "We are moving forward despite the current hard times to prepare for the future. We want to be proactive, to establish the pathways now to get there."

Presented by UB Human Resources and the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC), the job fair will provide details on the National Work Readiness Credential Program, how to navigate the New York State Civil Service website, information on its competitive exam process and preparation courses, and how to complete an online application.

Information also will be provided on potential profession and Research Foundation positions, as well as on UB salary, benefits and work-life balance.
