University Mourns Death of Recent Graduate

The UB community is mourning the death of Javon R. Jackson, a May 2009 UB graduate, who died on May 10 after being shot off-campus.

Javon R. Jackson, a 2009 UB graduate, died early this morning after being shot off campus.

The 23-year-old from New York City earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and was a member of the Order of the Engineer, the national engineering ethics society.

"The University is deeply saddened by this tragic loss," said UB President John B. Simpson. "Our hearts go out to Javon's family and friends."

A moment of silence was observed in Jackson's honor at the University's General Commencement ceremony in Alumni Arena this morning.

The University at Buffalo Police Department is assisting the Buffalo Police Department in the investigation, and UB staff members are providing support to Jackson's family. Students who may need support are encouraged to call the UB Counseling Services at (716) 645-2720.

The shooting occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. Sunday (May 10) on Main St. near Highgate Ave. in Buffalo.
