BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Businesses that want to boost efficiency and cut costs are invited to enroll in Certified Lean Practitioner training this summer at the University at Buffalo's Center for Industrial Effectiveness (TCIE).

Over the past five years, approximately 250 businesses in Buffalo Niagara have benefited from TCIE's Lean initiatives, which boost the skill sets of Western New York employees.

The Lean methodology is designed to enhance employees' skills in order to help their employers reduce costs, eliminate waste, improve on-time delivery, decrease cycle time and increase product quality.

Classes run will run from 8-11 a.m. on June 2, 9 and 30, July 14, 21 and 28, and Aug. 4, 11, 18 and 25. Sessions cost $1,095 per employee and take place at the UB Technology Incubator, 1576 Sweet Home Rd., in Amherst.

To become certified, employees must attend classes, take the exam and complete a Lean project at their workplace.

Course material covers the following topics: an overview of Lean, Lean Dot Game Simulation, 5S, Value Stream Mapping, Material Movement/Pull/Level Scheduling, Standardized Work/Operations Balancing, Set-up Reduction, Problem Solving and Kaizen Planning.

The new CLP program expands and replaces the previous Lean Workshop series offered by The Center for Industrial Effectiveness. Previous TCIE Lean Workshop Series participants who wish to be certified are not required to attend classes, but they must submit a Lean project and take the CLP exam; their cost is $300.
