At about 4:30 p.m. today, University at Buffalo police responded to a call of a suspicious person seen entering Lockwood Library, possibly with a gun.

Police responded and continue to search the six-floor library. The area was evacuated as a precaution and the campus was notified to avoid the area at 4:40 p.m. Officials announced at 5:40 p.m. that classes and activities on the university's North Campus would be cancelled tonight.

"All we have right now is a report of a suspicious person," said University spokesman Joe Brennan. "No one has been hurt, and no shots have been fired. Police are taking this seriously, and doing a careful, thorough search."

The safety of our students, faculty and staff remains our primary concern. The university's campus alert and emergency response was enacted quickly and appropriately.

The university will continue to provide information to students, faculty, staff and the public on its web site http://www.buffalo.edu, as well as through email and text messaging.
