On Feb. 16 at approximately 4:03 p.m. University Police received a call reporting that a man with a rifle was seen in Lockwood Library.

The description of the suspect is as follows: White male, early 20s, short brown hair but not a brush cut, 5-foot-6 or taller, light facial hair, Navy pea coat, carrying what appeared to be a rifle. University Police evacuated the library to search for the suspect.

The investigation is continuing, but UB Police were not able to confirm there was a man with a gun on campus. Amherst Police responded to the incident and assisted University Police in a comprehensive search of the library. Buffalo Police patrolled UB's South Campus temporarily while UB Police deployed officers to the North Campus. No suspect or weapon was found.

Exercising an abundance of caution, the university cancelled classes on the North Campus this evening only. At this time, UB Police believes there is not a continuing threat to the campus community. All operations will return to normal tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.

Police patrols have been increased on the North Campus this evening.

Members of the university community are urged to remember to stay alert to their surroundings, to always travel with other people and to report any unusual circumstances or suspicious persons and activities to the University Police as soon as possible. When possible, use the Anti-Rape Task Force Safety Escort program or other UB transportation services. Call 829-2584 for escort program information, or go to the program's Web site at http://healtheducation.buffalo.edu.
