Media Advisory: UB Scholars of Excellence Luncheon Honors Some of University's Best and Brightest

Some of the University at Buffalo's best and brightest undergraduate students who have won or been nominated for prestigious, national scholarships will be honored at UB's Scholars of Excellence Luncheon today, April 1, in the Center for Tomorrow on the North Campus.

The luncheon will start at 11:30 a.m. Michael Ryan, vice provost for undergraduate education, is the host.

Among the more than 30 students to be honored are:

Jasmine May, of Sanborn, N.Y., who is studying medicinal chemistry and who was notified yesterday that she has won the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, awarded to students with outstanding potential and who intend to pursue advanced degrees in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. May plans to pursue an academic career investigating drug therapies to treat brain cancer.

Claire Lochner of Williamsville, UB's nominee for the Morris K. Udall Scholarship, which recognizes outstanding sophomores and juniors who study the environment and related fields. A junior majoring in electrical engineering, she plans to pursue a PhD in electrical engineering.

Emmanuel Effah-Appiah, a native of Juansa, Ghana, who is working toward a dual degree in biochemistry and chemistry. He intends to pursue an MD/PhD in neuroscience.

Colin Lea of Oswego, who is majoring in mechanical engineering. He performs research in UB's Automation, Robotics and Mechatronics Lab and plans to pursue graduate research in robotics.

Kayla Maxwell of Buffalo, an undergraduate teaching assistant in biology, who will be a summer research fellow at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. She hopes to earn her PhD at Roswell Park, concurrently with UB's PharmD program.
