UB 2020 Downtown Campus

The exact nature of the University at Buffalo's expansion downtown has not yet been finalized, but as decisions are made, they will be consistent with the guiding principles of Building UB, UB's comprehensive physical plan. This plan stipulates that UB will be a responsible community citizen and will collaborate with its neighbors to achieve a shared vision for the future.

• If UB relocates to downtown Buffalo the five health science schools of its Academic Health Center and continues development and construction of existing properties on its Downtown Campus as part of its "Building UB" master physical plan, the university anticipates bringing an additional 13,000 faculty, staff and students to downtown on a daily basis -- sparking further economic development of Buffalo's East Side. Full implementation of UB 2020 is expected to increase UB's regional economic impact from $1.7 billion to $3.6 billion annually.

• UB's UB 2020 Opportunities Advisory Council will identify and create ways to ensure that local residents are equipped with skills matched to current and future jobs created through UB 2020 initiatives and the region's emerging job market. The council also will support initiatives to increase the number of minority- and women-owned enterprises doing business with UB.

UB already has made significant progress in its plan to expand its Downtown Campus.

• The university currently is engaged with Kaleida Health in construction of a 10-floor clinical care, research and business incubation building on Goodrich and Ellicott streets downtown.

• It has relocated to the UB Downtown Gateway (the former M. Wile factory building) on Goodell Street its Regional Institute and new Office of Economic Engagement.

• UBMD, the parent organization of the medical practices of UB's medical school, is moving its administrative office to the UB Downtown Gateway building, where it will eventually renovate some 15,000 square feet to provide a permanent home for such business functions as billing and computer operations.

• In addition, UB will soon begin construction of a new Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) next door to the UB Downtown Gateway building. With UB's Office of Economic Engagement and other community partners, the EOC will identify and create ways to ensure that neighborhood residents are equipped with skills matched to current and future jobs created through UB 2020 initiatives and the region's emerging job market.
