3,150 Enroll in UB Freshman Class

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo has enrolled another academically talented freshman class, one that includes representatives of 30 states from throughout the U.S. and 55 countries around the globe.

The Class of 2014, which began classes on Monday, is made up of approximately 3,150 new freshmen; 86 percent of them are from New York State, 8 percent are international students and 6 percent come from outside of New York State.

Nearly one-third of the UB freshman chose to attend college close to home, with 31 percent hailing from the eight counties of Western New York, and an additional 28 percent from the New York City area, 20 percent from Central New York and 7 percent from the Albany region.

With an overall enrollment of more than 28,000 graduate and undergraduate students, UB is the largest institution in the State University of New York; U.S. News and World Report recently ranked UB as one of the nation's top public universities.

"We are very pleased with the makeup of our freshman class," said A. Scott Weber, UB vice provost and dean of undergraduate education. "We again have enrolled a very talented group of students who come from around the corner and around the world."

More than 900 members of the freshman class are receiving merit scholarships, including 23 who, with an average SAT score of 1503 and average high school marks of 98, are receiving Presidential Scholarships that cover four years of tuition, housing and other school expenses.

The UB Honors College, Weber noted, experienced a rise this year in the profile and number of students accepted into the prestigious program for exceptional undergraduate students, with some 323 students enrolling this year, up from 304 last year. The largest and best qualified in the Honors College's history, they enter UB with an average combined math and reading SAT score of 1382, up from 1377 last year, and average high school grades of 97.
