BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Nationally renowned corporate restructuring attorney Harvey R. Miller will discuss the General Motors and Lehman Brothers Chapter 11 cases on Oct. 14 at the University at Buffalo's Center for the Arts (CFA) on UB's North Campus.
"Financial Failure in Bankruptcy through the Prism of Lehman Brothers and General Motors" will be the topic of the program, which is free and open to the public. Reservations are required and can be made at http://mgt.buffalo.edu/apps/ormEvents/public/.
The visit will begin with a networking reception from 6-6:45 p.m. in the CFA atrium, followed by Miller's remarks and a question-and-answer session from 7-8:30 p.m. in the CFA screening room.
Sponsored by the UB School of Management and the UB Law School, in conjunction with the Upstate New York Turnaround Management Association (UNYTMA), this will be the sixth event in the annual Gerald S. Lippes Speaker Series.
Miller is a senior partner in the international law firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges based in New York City. Cited by The New York Times as "probably the best-known bankruptcy lawyer in the country," Miller has worked on the largest and most complex bankruptcy cases in the modern era, including General Motors, Lehman Brothers, Texaco, Sunbeam and Bethlehem Steel. He has been a member of his firm's management committee for more than 25 years and created and developed the firm's Business Finance and Restructuring department specializing in reorganizing distressed business entities.
This year, Miller was named one of the 40 "Most Influential Lawyers" of the past decade by The National Law Journal. Citing his work on multiple bankruptcies, including Lehman Brothers and General Motors, the Journal placed him within an elite group of lawyers "whose work was so consequential that it helped to push the profession, an industry or practice area substantially forward."
The Gerald S. Lippes Speaker Series focuses on current issues and topics related to business and finance. The series is part of a larger effort to foster an integrated understanding of the worlds of business and law, and to encourage a collaborative dialogue between business and legal professionals. The series is funded through the generous support of Gerald S. Lippes. Additional funding for this year's lecture is provided by the UNYTMA.
