BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Center for the Arts at University at Buffalo will present Tedeschi Trucks Band on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre in the Center for the Arts, UB North Campus. Scrapomatic will open the concert.
As husband-wife couples go in the world of music, it is a challenge to find a duo as well-fitted and naturally prolific as that of singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi and guitarist Derek Trucks. They both have successful careers; Tedeschi is an impressive blues singer and guitarist and Trucks, a member of The Allman Brothers Band and leader of his own outfit, is a master of slide-guitar. Having previously appeared on each other's solo albums, their new album, Revelator, marks the first time the pair has released anything under the Tedeschi Trucks name. True to a title that suggests both the gospel-flavored intensity and stunning, soulful blues, Revelator includes smoky, blues-laden rockers and heart-stilling ballads that show off the incredible talents of both Tedeschi and Trucks.
Most notably, Revelator features the newly formed Tedeschi Trucks Band, an 11-member ensemble overflowing with talent and musical familiarity. "With this album, everything's been thought out a little deeper," explains Trucks. "Revelator is the first true realization of that process in which the sum of the parts -- the songs, the band, Susan, and myself -- were greater than just the parts themselves." Interestingly enough, many musicians in the newly formed band are related not only by experience, but also by blood. This adds to the notion that Revelator is a true group album -- the product of a musical family. The album highlights the gutsier and softer side of Tedeschi's vocal ability, plus a series of emotive, story-telling solos shaped by Trucks' uncanny agility on slide-guitar. With its focus on tighter song structures and lyrics rather than extended improvisations, the album serves as dramatic leap forward for the duo.
Recognized for their outstanding live performances, the Tedeschi Trucks Band also includes singers Mike Mattison and Mark Rivers, bassist Oteil Burbridge, keyboardist/flutist Kofi Burbridge, drummers J. J. Johnson and Tyler Greenwell, plus trumpeter Maurice Brown, tenor saxophonist Kebbi Williams and trombonist Saunders Sermons.
