BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Center for the Arts at the University at Buffalo will present Fen from Wednesday, Feb. 29, to Saturday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 4, at 2 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre in the Center for the Arts, UB North Campus.
Fen tells the story of a rural area in England and its people who for centuries have been separated from the modern world of wealth, political power and the daily fruits of a modern, materialistic society. At the center of the play is a love story of a wife and mother who attempts to find hope, and escape from her social-fate as a common laborer, in a relationship with a man equally constricted by his life in the Fenland. Fen includes the ridiculous and comic as well, and the rapid shifts in tone and mood make it a highly theatrical work.
Caryl Churchill, author of Fen, is an internationally known playwright whose work has been given major international theatrical awards throughout the world. Churchill is a master of style, and handles her themes in wildly different ways, veering from farce to highly charged poetic and impressionistic drama. She is critically regarded as one of the pre-eminent modern playwrights of England and recipient of the Obie Sustained Achievement Award.
The is produced by the UB Department of Theatre and Dance, and is directed by Jerry Finnegan. Tom Ralabate is the producing artistic director. The cast is comprised of BFA and BA students at UB.
