BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo will host its annual UB Neighbor’s Day Block Party and Safety Fair from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, on the Hayes Hall lawn on the South Campus.
The event, a longstanding community tradition, provides an opportunity for neighborhood residents and UB students who live off campus to get to know each other and to kick off the academic year in a relaxed and informal environment.
The Block Party will begin with the “Running of the Bulls,” a parade featuring UB’s Thunder of the East marching band and student athletes who, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Winridge and Winspear, will wind their way through the surrounding neighborhoods and end at the lawn in front of Hayes Hall at 5 p.m.
The block party will continue on the lawn with live music by The Chicago Authority, free food and information tables staffed by businesses and organizations in the Main-Bailey neighborhood, as well as university departments, local police and government and community agencies.
UB Neighbor’s Day also will celebrate a neighborhood milestone with a birthday cake for Minnie, owner of a local dry cleaner who turned 100 last week and will join the celebration after she closes up her shop at 6 p.m.
The event will conclude with a simulated room fire at 7:30 p.m. to demonstrate how quickly fire can spread and how to guard against it.
The free event also will offer information about block clubs, community and civic groups and university services.
