BUFFALO, N.Y. — University at Buffalo geologists will once again host their annual Groundhog Day Cookout on UB’s North Campus.
The tradition dates back to 1983, when UB geology staffer Dave Borden brought his grill and a taxidermied groundhog to work to mark the special day. The celebration has been held almost every year since.
What: UB Department of Geology Groundhog Day cookout
When: 11:45 a.m. on Groundhog Day (Tuesday, Feb. 2).
Where: North entrance of the Natural Sciences Complex, facing the Computing Center, on UB North Campus. (The Natural Sciences Complex is Building No. 15 on this map: http://bit.ly/1DTCNEV.)
Who: The event is heavily attended by students and faculty in the geology department, and is also open to other members of the UB community.
Borden and Ridge Lea Larry — the taxidermied groundhog who started it all — will be on hand for the occasion. At noon, Larry will be taken outside to look for his shadow.
What you will see: The grill will be fired up, with hot dogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers as the main dishes. Homemade groundhog-shaped sugar cookies will be another treat.
