BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo’s New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences (CBLS) is home to three state-of-the art core facilities that provide assistance to UB faculty and industries in need of services in genomics, proteomics and supercomputing.

The CBLS will host a lecture introducing the core facilities and collaborative industry partners leveraging the state-of-the-art equipment and expertise on Thursday, March 24, from 4–5 p.m. at 701 Ellicott St., Buffalo.

Representatives from Buffalo-based companies Athenex and Sentient Science, as well as Ithaca-based Rheonix, will discuss their partnerships with the core facilities and how these collaborations were pivotal in helping each company with critical research and development.

“The CBLS proudly offers some of the finest technology and world-class facilities in the Buffalo Niagara region,” said Norma Nowak, PhD, executive director at the CBLS. “Whether you are affiliated with UB or an outside research organization, we invite you to discover the high-tech resources available to fulfill your research and development needs.”

The CBLS core facilities include the Center for Computational Research (CCR), the Genomics and Bioinformatics Core (GBC) and the Proteomics and Bioanalysis Core (PBC).

CCR is a leading academic supercomputing facility with thousands of computers occupying a 4,000-square-foot machine room, working 24/7 to solve complex computational problems.

The GBC’s team of experts offers the latest advances in next-generation sequencing and gene expression assays as a service to the UB research community as well as external researchers and private entities. The GBC provides strong downstream analytics to help facilitate novel research, discovery and product development.

The PBC aligns closely with the Center for Protein Therapeutics in UB’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences by specializing in proteomics, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and bioinformatics. For nearly 10 years, the PBC has focused its research efforts on protein-based drug analysis. It also uses its expertise to service Fortune 500 companies, including Merck and Johnson & Johnson.
