Buffalo, NY- The Center for the Arts, University at Buffalo presents Kendrick Scott Oracle on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $26.50, Students (any school) $19.50. The concert will be held in the Drama Theatre as part of the Center’s Jazz Series.
"Kendrick Scott has become the Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, and Tony Williams of his generation," says the renowned trumpeter and bandleader Terence Blanchard of his longtime drummer who made his own Blue Note debut with the release of a remarkable new album, We Are The Drum. "He's a brilliant mind bringing innovation to the music at the same time as creating a safe place for young talent to develop and grow."
In the decade that Scott occupied the drum throne in Blanchard’s band, he had the opportunity to learn first-hand from an established master who gave Scott the space to find his own voice both on his instrument and as a composer. In turn, Scott took that experience and founded one of the premiere new ensembles in jazz: Kendrick Scott Oracle. The band currently features a top notch collective of young musicians capable of a wide range of musical expression: saxophonist John Ellis, keyboardist Taylor Eigsti, guitarist Mike Moreno, and bassist Joe Sanders.
Kendrick Scott was born in Houston, Texas and grew up in a family of musicians. By age 8 he had taken up the drums and he later attended Houston’s renowned High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, a school which has produced an impressive array of musical talent including Scott’s label mates Jason Moran and Robert Glasper, as well pop star Beyoncé and many others. While still attending HSPVA, Scott won several DownBeat Magazine student awards, as well as the Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Award from the International Association of Jazz Educators. He was later awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music, where he majored in music education.
Scott has toured with Herbie Hancock, Charles Lloyd, The Crusaders, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Kurt Elling, and Terence Blanchard, also appearing on several of the trumpeter’s Blue Note albums. Kendrick has released three albums as a bandleader including two previous album with Oracle: The Source (2007) and Conviction (2013).
