BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Linda Yalem Safety Run, one of the University at Buffalo’s most enduring traditions, returns for its 27th year to promote personal safety and remember UB student Linda Yalem.
A 5K USA Track and Field-certified course, the popular annual run is an official qualifying race for the Buffalo News Runner of the Year series, but the event is also open to casual runners and walkers.
Post-race events will include food, entertainment and a kids’ dash for children ages 5 to 10.
When: The race begins at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25.
Where: Alumni Arena on the North Campus. For a campus map, visit http://bit.ly/2cqTD85.
About the race: Each year, the Linda Yalem Safety Run welcomes more than 1,000 runners and walkers, and nearly 600 volunteers who believe in the importance of personal safety.
Registration fees support rape-prevention and safety awareness programming at UB, including the University Police Aide Escort Program, women’s safety and sexual assault prevention programs, and counseling groups.
The run honors the memory of Yalem, a UB student who was murdered in September 1990 on the Amherst Bike Path while training for the New York City Marathon.
Runners can still register on race day, from 7:30-9:25 a.m. at Alumni Arena.
Registration is $30 for the general public and $20 for UB students. New to this year is a group rate discount, offering five runners the opportunity to sign up for the price of four. To register a group, contact Terri Budek at tfrysh@buffalo.edu.
