New safety course among TCIE offerings this fall for business professionals

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A training program that addresses safety-enhancing manufacturing workplace practices debuts this fall as part of TCIE’s professional development schedule of offerings.

The 32-hour course, called Manufacturing Safety, consists of a combination of materials from the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Outreach Training Program. Participants have the opportunity to earn two nationally recognized and transferrable safety credentials: a Safety Certificate from MSSC and an OSHA 10-hour General Industry card.

Training consists of completing MSSC’s online safety module and attending class sessions for the OSHA portion. An orientation will be held from 8:30-10 a.m. on Oct. 11 at UB’s Baird Research Park, 1576 Sweet Home Road, Amherst. Class sessions are 8 a.m.-noon on Nov. 7-9 at the Hyatt Place, 5020 Main St., Amherst.

Other course topics in the fall lineup include continuous improvement methodologies, internal auditing, logistics operations and finance. They range from full-day seminars to a 9-month certification program. Registration is on a first-serve basis, with the deadline being one week before the respective start date. Course details are as follows:

• Certified Production Technician (CPT) Info Session – 8:30-10 a.m. on Sept. 14 at Baird Research Park. Attendees will be given an overview about TCIE’s CPT training, which supplies the core knowledge and skills required for frontline manufacturing jobs.
• Certified Logistics Technician — This 76-hour training, which is a blend of online learning supported by instructor-led assessment preparation, provides core knowledge and skills required in supply chain operations, from entry level through supervisor. Classroom dates are 8:30-10:30 a.m. on Sept. 7, Sept. 28 and Nov. 2 at Baird Research Park.
• Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Transactional - Blended — This 134-hour blended-learning course consists primarily of online education, enhanced by classroom-based discussion and project review sessions. Candidates acquire enhanced problem-solving skills and an advanced mastery of Six Sigma’s industry-tested system for process variation reduction. An early-bird discount of $500 is available until Aug. 25. Full-day classes: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sept. 25, Oct. 2, Nov. 6, Dec. 4, Jan. 8, Feb. 5. Half-day classes: 8 a.m.-noon on Oct. 3, Nov. 7, Dec. 5, Jan. 9. Project review sessions: 8-10 a.m. on Oct. 16, Nov. 20, Dec. 18, Jan. 22, Feb. 12, March 5 and 19, April 10 and 23, May 7 and 21.

• Minitab^TM Software Training — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sept. 26 at Baird Research Park. This training navigates participants through the statistical tools of Minitab software so that they may comfortably manipulate data and solve problems.
• Certified Lean Professional — 6-9 p.m. on Thursdays, Sept. 28 to Dec. 14 (except Nov. 23), as well as Feb. 5 and 13, at Baird Research Park. This course educates participants in the Lean method of saving money and reducing waste by identifying unnecessary processes.
• Intro to FMEA — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 4 at Baird Research Park. This course is recommended for design and manufacturing engineers who are involved in the product development process and want to learn how to avoid potential failures in design.
• Kaizen and VSM — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 18 at Baird Research Park. This course explores two Lean tools: kaizen, an activity aimed at streamlining a select process, and value stream mapping, an analysis tool used to improve the flow of information or materials.
• Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Action Training — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 31 at the Hyatt Place. This course is designed to improve problem-solving skills by providing an understanding of the processes and techniques for determining the root cause of a nonconformance and the corrective action needed to prevent the problem from occurring again.
• Finance for Non-Financial Managers — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Nov. 1 at Baird Research Park. This course is for managers who do not possess a significant financial background, but would benefit from a working knowledge of financial statements and related concepts, including commonly used financial terminology and performance measures.
• ISO 9001:2015 Transition Training — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Nov. 1 at the Hyatt Place. This training is for anyone who is already familiar with the ISO 9001:2008 standard and is involved in transitioning their company to ISO 9001:2015.
• Lean Product Design Workshop – 1-5 p.m. on Nov. 2 at Baird Research Park. This workshop engages participants in a hands-on simulation to discover how applying the Lean methodology to product design decreases cycle time.
• 3-Day ISO 9001:2015 Internal Auditor Training — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Nov. 13-15 at the Hyatt Place. This training prepares participants with the skills necessary to perform internal process audits in manufacturing, service and public service sectors.
• 5S and Standardized Work — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the Hyatt Place. This course explores two Lean tools: 5S, a technique for organizing one’s physical environment, and standardized work, a technique for organizing process steps.
