UB offers early-bird pricing for select business improvement courses

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo Center for Industrial Effectiveness (TCIE) is offering early-bird discounts for two professional certification programs that start in September.  

The savings of $500 for Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Transactional (CLSSBBT) and $100 for Certified Lean Professional (CLP) are valid until Aug. 24.

The courses are part of TCIE’s fall inventory of open-enrollment business improvement courses for professionals, which range from half-day seminars to the 9-month CLSSBBT. Registration is on a first-serve basis, with the deadline being one week before the respective start date. Classes are held at UB’s Baird Research Park, 1576 Sweet Home Road, Amherst.

CLSSBBT — This 134-hour blended learning course consists primarily of online education, enhanced by classroom-based discussion and project review sessions. Candidates acquire enhanced problem-solving skills and an advanced mastery of Six Sigma’s industry-tested system for process variation reduction.  

The schedule is as follows:   

• Half-day classes: 8 a.m.-noon on Sept. 24, Oct. 2, Dec. 4, Jan. 8
• Full-day classes: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 1, Nov. 5 and 6, Dec. 3, Jan. 7, Feb. 4
• Project review sessions: 8-10 a.m. on Oct. 15, Nov. 19, Dec. 17, Jan. 14, March 4 and 18, April 1, May 6 and 20, June 17
• Exam review session: 8-10 a.m. on Feb. 11

CLP — This 33-hour course educates participants in the Lean method of saving money and reducing waste by identifying unnecessary processes. The schedule is as follows:

Classes: 6-9 p.m. on Thursdays, Sept. 27 to Dec. 13 (except Nov. 22)

Project review sessions: Feb. 4 and 11 (each participant has one 30-minute, one-on-one project review session with the instructor on one of the two dates)

Minitab^TM Software Training — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 3. This training navigates participants through the statistical tools of Minitab software so that they may comfortably manipulate data and solve problems.

Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Action Training — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 4. This course is designed to improve problem-solving skills by providing an understanding of the processes and techniques for determining the root cause of a nonconformance and the corrective action needed to prevent the problem from occurring again.

Intro to FMEA — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 16. This course is recommended for design and manufacturing engineers who are involved in the product development process and want to learn how to avoid potential failures in design.

Lean Product Design Workshop – 8 a.m.-noon on Oct. 18. This workshop engages participants in a hands-on simulation to discover how applying the Lean methodology to product design decreases cycle time.

3-Day ISO 9001:2015 Internal Auditor Training — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 23-25. This training prepares participants with the skills necessary to perform internal process audits in manufacturing, service and public service sectors.

Kaizen and VSM — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 30. This course explores two Lean tools: Kaizen, an activity aimed at streamlining a select process, and Value Stream Mapping, an analysis tool used to improve the flow of information or materials.

Finance for Non-Financial Managers — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Nov. 7. This course is for the manager or engineer who does not possess a significant financial background, but whose performance would improve with a better understanding of departmental monthly financial reports and the transactional origins behind the numbers.

3-Day AS9100D Internal Auditor Training – 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Nov. 13-15. This training prepares participants with the skills necessary to perform internal process audits in the aerospace industry.

5S and Standardized Work — 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Nov. 28. This course explores two Lean tools: 5S, a technique for organizing one’s physical environment, and Standardized Work, a technique for organizing process steps.

What is Operational Excellence? – 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Dec. 5. This course is an opportunity to learn and think about how to position an organization to achieve “excellence.” It educates participants about tools and methodologies, arming them with knowledge to choose the best fit for their organization’s business needs.

3-Day ISO 13485 Internal Auditor Training – 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Dec.11-13. This training prepares participants with the skills necessary to perform internal process audits in the medical device industry.
