“If we can help them with their oral health and overall health on this special day, it will not only be a positive effect for the veterans, but for the volunteer dentists and hygienists as well. ”

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine will host the fourth annual Dentistry Smiles on Veterans, an event that offers free dental care to local servicemen and women.

The program — a partnership between UB Dental, the New York State Dental Association and the Eighth District Dental Society — will provide free dental screenings, cleanings, restorations, extractions, and repairs to 150 Western New York veterans.

When: Saturday, Nov. 10, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: UB Dental Clinic in Squire Hall on the South Campus. Click here for a map of the campus.

The Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station Honor Guard will lead a procession into the clinic at 8:30 a.m. New York State Sen. Timothy M. Kennedy, UB Provost Charles F. Zukoski, and Joseph J. Zambon, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor and dean of the School of Dental Medicine, will deliver remarks immediately following the procession.

Media are invited to attend. Photo opportunities are best available at 10 a.m. On-site contact is Edward Morrison, edwardmo@buffalo.edu, 716-955-0393.

Why: Dentistry Smiles on Veterans aims to deliver needed services to those who have served their country through military service. The program is aimed toward veterans who lack dental insurance or do not qualify for dental treatment through the Veterans Health Administration, a benefit reserved only for those with service-related dental injuries.

Throughout the day, more than 100 Buffalo-area dentists, dental assistants and hygienists, and UB dental students, faculty and staff will volunteer to provide care ranging from simple cleanings to oral surgery.

“The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, in collaboration with the New York State Dental Association, are honored to serve those brave veterans from our area who selflessly served our country,” said Brendan Dowd, DMD, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry.

“If we can help them with their oral health and overall health on this special day, it will not only be a positive effect for the veterans, but for the volunteer dentists and hygienists as well.”
