UB statement on impact of government shutdown on federally funded projects

The University at Buffalo’s work on active sponsored programs funded by the affected agencies has continued and UB’s largest federal research sponsor, the NIH, is fully funded and will not be affected by the government shutdown.

Most federally funded UB projects that are in progress should not be affected. However, the National Science Fund, another large funding source for the university, could be affected, along with the NOAA, Department of Transportation, Homeland Security/FEMA, National Endowment for the Humanities and NASA.

UB’s research enterprise could see potential declinations of proposal submissions for deadlines that had been previously announced, and program officers at agencies may not be available for approvals or for consultation with principle investigators.

Long-term, the university can expect delays in the peer-review process at the affected agencies and slower turnaround time on proposal funding decisions and feedback on declined proposals. Affected agencies may also stop making sponsored program payments, which would delay incoming awards to the university, or the evaluation of proposals in an agency’s pipeline.
