BUFFALO, N.Y. — Programming a robot. Designing a new video game.

Those are just two of the immersive, hands-on experiences a 13 local high school girls will encounter this week at the University at Buffalo during a three-day computer science and engineering camp.

News media are invited to check out the camp. Here are the details.

What: CSExplore Camp, a three-day camp to introduce high school girls to the fundamentals of computing, from the hardware of circuits to the logic of writing software.

Who: Local high school girls, UB faculty and staff.

Where: The camp will be centered at 114 Bonner Hall, UB North Campus, with occasional trips to nearby on-campus research labs.

When: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Why: Women are one of a number of historically underrepresented groups in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. Programs such as CSExplore are working boost diversity in these fields.

Best times for news media:

  • Thursday, from 8:40 to 9:30 a.m., students will be designing video games.
  • Thursday, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., students will be working with ultrasonic inchworm robots.
  • Friday, from 10 a.m.-noon, students will be programming robots.
