BUFFALO, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo has been named to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance’s 2019 list of “Best College Values” for delivering students a high-quality education at an affordable price.
UB placed 61st on the magazine’s list of public colleges for in-state students and 56th for out-of-state students.
“We are pleased to once again be recognized by Kiplinger’s as a university that provides its students with a great education at a great value,” said Graham Hammill, UB’s vice provost for educational affairs.
“Whether it’s the Excelsior Scholarship or Finish in 4, UB is proud to offer programs that help students cut down on the cost of their education, without sacrificing quality. UB’s value demonstrates that it is possible to obtain a world-class education at an affordable cost,” Hammill added.
Kiplinger’s expanded its “Best College Values” ranking this year to include 400 schools, plus an additional 100 that narrowly missed the list but also deliver a great value.
The magazine starts by analyzing academic measures, including the student-to-faculty ratio, test scores of incoming freshmen, and the percentage of students who return for their sophomore year.
Kiplinger’s awards the most points for four-year graduation rates because graduating on time helps keep costs down. However, to reflect the benefit of earning a degree, even if it takes longer, the magazine revised its rankings to award a handful of points for five- and six-year rates. It also rewards schools that do a first-rate job of graduating students with financial need.
UB ranked 221st overall on Kiplinger’s list of public and private institutions.
The estimated cost of attendance for the 2019-20 academic year at UB is $24,314 (including room and board) for New York State residents and $42,008 for out-of-state residents.
In addition to the Kiplinger’s recognition, UB appeared on another list — the Center for World University Rankings — where it placed 59th among U.S. public universities and No. 269 overall among 20,000 universities worldwide.
The Center for World University Rankings publishes the largest academic rankings of global universities.
