An article in The New York Times on a controversial Massachusetts school that specializes in treating the most-challenging special-education students by using electric shocks as a punishment for bad behavior quotes William Pelham, director of the Center for Children and Families. "People don't use it anymore because they don't need to," he said. "It is not the standard of care. There are alternative procedures that do not involve adversives like electronic shock. And I am not talking about drugs as an alternative. I am talking about other behavioral treatments."
