The cover story in BusinessWeek magazine looks at cities that are holding mortgage lenders accountable for upkeep and maintenance of homes that wind up in foreclosure and the efforts of Buffalo prosecutor Cindy T. Cooper, who holds a law degree and doctorate in sociology from UB, to force financial-service companies to maintain vacant and abandoned homes in order to prevent the spread of neighborhood and community blight. "At least in Buffalo, the days are gone when you can do a foreclosure and walk away without taking care of the property," she said.
