An article in Smithsonian magazine reports UB researchers have used a naturally occurring breast milk protein-lipid complex named HAMLET to successfully destroy drug-resistant staph bacteria. The article quotes Anders Hakansson, assistant professor of microbiology and immunology, who has been exploring the immunity-boosting properties in human breast milk since 1994. The research is receiving broad media coverage, with articles also appearing in Business First, Healthline, Science Codex, Red Orbit, Science Daily, The International, Radio Canada and Science Magazine, among others.
