An article Wired about the earthquake swarm taking place in Iceland looks at theories about what is causing the swarm, including a theory by Alison Graettinger, a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Geology, who suggested that any basalt under Askja misses intersecting with rhyolite mush, producing basaltic lava flows as has been seen around Askja over the past few decades.
