Veteran researcher leads UB's efforts to boost local economy

A Q&A in the business section of Sunday’s Buffalo News interviews Venu Govindaraju, interim vice president for research and economic development who, after graduating from a competitive college in his native India, earned master’s and doctoral degrees at UB and then joined the UB faculty before being named to his current position. The article notes that UB reported $388 million in research spending in 2013, ranking the university 57th in the nation, according to the National Science Foundation, and that the university’s entire annual economic impact is estimated at $2.8 billion. “All good, comprehensive universities are trying to improve and be more effective and have a bigger impact on the economy,” he said. “The approach that most universities probably are taking, and UB is for sure, is let us look at our strengths.”
