Scholarships help keep new doctors in local community

A front page article in the Buffalo News reports a group of Buffalo-area doctors has created a scholarship program to encourage UB medical school students to stay here after graduation. The article notes the Western New York Medical Scholarship Fund recently awarded three UB medical students at least $30,000 a year for four years and requires recipients to practice medicine in the region for at least five years after they complete their studies and residencies. The article quotes John J. Bodkin II, a family physician who founded and co-chairs the medical scholarship fund, and Gina Sparacino, one of the recipients of the scholarship.
