Charles Ewing, SUNY Distinguished Service Professor in the UB Law School and the author of “Insanity: Murder, Madness and the Law,” was interviewed by BBC News for a story about John Hinckley Jr., the man who shot President Ronald Regan and was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and whether he should remain a patient at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Washington, D.C. “Ordinarily when someone gets to this point, it’s very difficult to say they’re a continued danger,” he said. “It seems like this is a political issue more than a psychological issue. Because of the nature of his offense, people don’t feel like he should ever be released.”
