A story on ABC Radio reports on research by Matthew Xu-Friedman, associate professor of biological sciences, that found that cells that relay information from the ear to the brain can change in significant ways in response to the noise level in the environment. People who live in noisy environments don’t seem to mind it as much as those who might be visiting, he said, not because they’re going deaf, but because they just happen to get used to their noisy surroundings. The story aired on stations around the country, including WTOP-AM in Washington, D.C., WEIS-FM in Alabama, WJBD-AM in Illinois, KTIC-AM in Nebraska and KMBC-FM in Kansas City.
