Texas agency weighs validity of bite-mark evidence

An article in The Wall Street Journal about a Texas commission that will review the use of bite-mark evidence in criminal cases because of concerns about the forensic technique’s accuracy looks at research conducted by Peter Bush, director of the UB South Campus Instrument Center, and Mary Bush, associate professor of restorative dentistry, that challenges the underpinnings of bite-mark analysis. “Even under … ideal circumstances, we cannot duplicate bites,” said Mary Bush. “It can only get worse when you have the real event.” An Associated Press article about the Texas Forensic Science Commission’s review quotes Peter Bush, who said other states would likely follow the lead of Texas.
