An article in the San Francisco Chronicle about rising overtime costs in the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department, which spiked 34 percent last year, quotes John Violanti, research professor of epidemiology and environmental health in the School of Public Health and Health Professions. “This might be a catch-22,” he said. “Because officers are working overtime, they’re getting injured more, because they’re getting injured more, they’re on sick leave more, and because they’re on sick leave more, other officers need to work more overtime.”
