An article in USA Today about radioactive material that has been reported missing from a storage bunker in southern Iraq quotes Chong Cheng, associate professor of chemical and biological engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, who said the material, classified as a Category 2 radioactive source, can cause cancer and other diseases due to the high-energy particles emitted. “The material itself may not be explosive, however if mixed with explosives, it can be very dangerous,” he said, and the resulting bombs “can cause serious radioactive disasters, in addition to explosive casualties.”
