An article in The Washington Post about what hiring managers can learn from the NFL Draft reports on research by Timothy Maynes, assistant professor of organization and human resources in the UB School of Management, that found that team-oriented behaviors – players who take rookies under their wing, spend a lot of time watching film and are known for spending extra time in the weight room – are just as good at predicting success in the draft, as well as their performance during their NFL careers, as how many tackles they had or passes they threw on the field. “Of course as you’d expect the on-field performance [to be] a significant predictor,” he said. “But so was our measure of contextual performance. ... It was at least equally as important to the evaluation.”
