Gawker files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection

An article in The Washington Post about Friday’s announcement that Gawker Media has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and put itself up for sale after losing a $140.1 million privacy-invasion lawsuit to professional wrestler Hulk Hogan quote Samantha Barbas, associate professor of law. As a practical matter for the news media, the bankruptcy filing “intensifies what’s been the message of the Hogan case all along — that in this day and age, the media can’t necessarily be as confident as they once were that they can publish with impunity,” she said.

Barbas also was quoted about the Gawker bankruptcy filing in USA Today. “The public's overwhelming support for Hulk Hogan in this case, and its apparent distaste for Gawker, are signs that the public — and perhaps the courts — are no longer willing to take an ‘anything goes’ approach to newsworthiness,” she said.
