An article in New York Magazine about “collective effervescence,” the need to connect with fellow, synchronized humans through protests, parties or sporting events, quotes Shira Gabriel, associate professor of psychology, who said she was initiated into collective effervescence by following Phish during her grad-school years. “What is so positive about being in the spot where the music is made?” she said. “It’s a special experience, that feeling of connection, of being in that giant crowd.”
