A Buffalo News feature about UB's Center of Excellence for Alzheimer's Disease in Western New York, based at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, discusses how the UB center helps patients navigate treatment and resources. The story quotes Bruce Troen, center co-director and professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, Kinga Szigeti, associate professor of neurology and director of the center and Leilani Joven Pelletier, program director.
"Our goal is very much educating and informing our colleagues and giving them the tools so they can recognize these diseases," Troen said. "And early recognition doesn't mean you start throwing medications at people. What you really have to do is recognize the impacts of dementia – which are very far reaching – and come up with a broad-based approach to help the person, and his or her family, deal with the disease."
