Colleges recruit at whiter and wealthier high schools

An article in The New York Times looks at an analysis that showed that high schools visited by colleges and universities for recruiting events tended to be whiter and wealthier than schools that were not visited, and reports on a study by Megan Holland, research assistant professor of educational leadership and policy in the UB Graduate School of Education, that showed that college recruitment visits aren’t merely an indicator of each school’s priorities, but also influence where students – and particularly first-generation students – apply and enroll. The article notes that many smart students from less-affluent backgrounds are sensitive to feeling wanted, and often attended colleges that took the time to visit.
