Ancient arts are inspiring modern electronics

An article in Smithsonian Magazine by Shenqiang Ren, professor of mechanical engineering in the UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, looks at how kirigami, the ancient art of paper cutting and a lesser-known cousin of the folding art of origami, is inspiring innovations in modern electronics. “Thanks to artistic innovations hundreds of years ago, clothes and bandages may one day be able to help athletes maximize performance, monitor the health of people with chronic illnesses, and give soldiers and emergency workers important information about themselves and those in their care,” he writes.
