What's behind the decline in volunteer firefighters?

The Associated Press interviewed Natalie Simpson, associate professor of operations management and strategy, about how emergency responders nationwide have fewer people to navigate disaster response, meaning they have to do more with less. Speaking about the decline in volunteer firefighters, Simpson said: “The bottom line is that people have a lot less time than they used to.” She added: “For safety’s sake, there is a lot more training now than there ever was, so this will continue to be a problem.”
