The Buffalo News profiled UB spinoff company Garwood Medical Devices, which has raised more than $14 million and “has a chance to be the next hot Buffalo startup.” The story notes that company is developing BioPrax, a device that aims to use electrical stimulation to help joint-replacement patients fight off infections.

The story notes that the technology behind BioPrax evolved from the work of UB researchers Mark Ehrensberger and Anthony Campagnari, and is patented by UB and Syracuse University and exclusively licensed by Garwood Medical Devices.

The article also quoted Timothy Murphy, senior associate dean for clinical and translational research in the Jacob School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. “For the company to take off — and be successful — would be a game changer for how joint replacement patients are managed — and the market for that would be absolutely huge,” said Murphy. “The technology of this is most exciting to me.”
