How to stop AI deepfakes from sinking society — and science

Siwei Lyu was quoted by Nature as the battle between AI deepfake creators and those working to detect it continues to grow more intense. Lyu highlighted AI-generated videos with mismatched blinking eyes, a problem that generators have since fixed. As AI deepfake creators continue to grow more sophisticated, academic institutes such as UB’s DeepFake-o-meter have begun identifying and combating fake content. While Lyu's work has made strides in addressing fake content, there remain ongoing challenges, including the need to determine the intent behind fake content and the attribution of such content to its creators.
