The Wall Street Journal reports on the new thinking on concussions and how the Buffalo Protocol treatment, named for its UB developers John Leddy and Barry Willer has now become the international consensus for treating concussions. The story describes how Leddy, while treating UB athletes 30 years ago, began to think that the prevailing treatment at the time, requiring athletes to refrain from all activity, wasn’t helpful either physically or psychologically. “If people can be rehabilitated to return to exercise after a heart attack, why not take the same approach to the brain and find out how much exercise someone could do before their brain symptoms of concussion went up more than mildly?” Leddy asked. The story discusses Leddy’s hypothesis that mild to moderate aerobic activity isn’t just ok, it actually boosts recovery after a concussion.
