Maeve Howett, associate dean for strategic initiatives at the University at Buffalo School of Nursing, is the 2024 recipient of the Neil Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing’s Distinguished Nursing Achievement Award from Emory University.

The award is presented to a graduate of the Neil Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing “... whose career has demonstrated continuous and exemplary contributions to the profession of nursing and/or healthcare.”

Howett earned her PhD in nursing with a certificate in women’s Studies, as well as her master’s and bachelor’s degrees, from Emory University.

As associate dean for strategic initiatives, Howett oversees the vision and ensures the execution of the UB School of Nursing’s strategic objectives. This role entails coordinating all academic, research and practice/service missions within the school. She also plays a leading role in fostering mutually beneficial and equitable relationships between the school and its community partners. 

Howett’s extensive leadership experience in higher education includes having served as associate dean for baccalaureate education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Nursing; assistant dean for undergraduate education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst College of Nursing; director of accelerated programs at Emory University; and co-director of Southeastern Pediatric Health Education Unit in Atlanta.

Howett’s exceptional contributions to nursing science research have focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion in health care and nursing education. In December 2023, the American Academy of Nursing appointed Howett to serve on its Expert Panel on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) Health. Expert panels are instrumental in shaping health care policies. 

She was also inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 2023. 

Howett will receive the award on Friday, February 28 at 6 p.m. at The Carter Center in Atlanta.
